Duran, representing ECO Foundation (Excellence and Quality in Oncology), joins the group of experts
This is the first time that a Spanish entity participates in an international multidisciplinary group with these characteristics
Madrid, July 18th, 2019.- Spanish oncologist Ignacio Duran has been appointed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Inc. (ASCO®) to be part of the Genitourinary Measure Development Panel, a panel of experts that over the next 3 years will define Quality measures in the management of genitourinary tumors to subsequently apply them to the daily clinical practice. Dr. Ignacio Durán works in this project representing ECO Foundation (Excellence and Quality in Oncology), the first network of experts formed by more than twenty Heads of Service of the main Spanish hospitals.
Specifically, the members of the Genitourinary Measure Development Panelwill develop and maintain the quality care criteria to treat prostate, bladder, testicle or kidney tumors. “It is very exciting, and I am very grateful for the opportunity that is given to me to be able to collaborate in a project of this magnitude. The fact that Spanish oncology is represented in the committees of the American Society of Clinical Oncology is a source of pride and success for the ECO Foundation, which has created strong links with ASCO.” explained Dr. Durán. In Spain, dr. Ignacio Durán is the coordinator of the genitourinary tumor area in the Medical Oncology service of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital (Santander).
During his education, Dr. Duran completed a “fellowship” in the Department of Development of New Drugs and Genitourinary Tumors of the Princess Margaret Cancer Center of Toronto (Canada) between 2004 and 2007. Throughout his career, he has published extensively in the field of genitourinary oncology and has received international awards such as the “ASCO Foundation Merit Award”, the “Novartis Young Canadian Investigator Award” and the “University Health Network Outstanding Research Presentation Award “.
“This is the first time that a Spanish organization has joined this select group of experts who define, ultimately, those rules and guidelines that must be followed by the hospital to provide quality care to their cancer patients. It is a source of pride for us to collaborate in this initiative that once again places Spanish Oncology on the international cancer map, explains Dr. Rafael López, quality director of the ECO Foundation.
ASCO develops measures independently through “Measurement Panels”, reviewed by the Measures Steering Group (“MSG”) of the Quality of Care Council (QCC). The measures are updated every 2-3 years or when there is evidence that changes the care practices.
